NATO's code name for the Antonov An-2 is “colt.” The Russians call them kukuruzniks or “little corn farmers.” Either way, they're safe, sturdy, reliable old birds, employing the same engine that the twin DC-3 flew for years.
These planes provide a great "bang for the buck!" We selected them at Golden Rule Airlines for many reasons, but here are some high points:
• Designed in the 1940's, they are still manufactured in Poland and China. Over 18,000 have been produced. Service facilities are available all over the former Soviet Union.
• Over one billion passengers have flown • Their capacity is 12 passengers or 2200 pounds (1000 kilograms -- more cargo with less fuel) of cargo, they burn less than 50 gallons (210 litres) of fuel/hour -- either aviation fuel or regular car gas.
• Mechanics, pilots, parts and planes are readily available in central Asia.
• Used, airworthy aircraft are available for under (US)$100,000. Used aircraft requiring repair are available for much less. New engines, "fresh out of the box" are available for under $25,000.
